Sewing machine

So I asked Narda for a sewing machine for Chanukah.

I'm really excited, as I used to have an "old school" Singer, black, one stitch, etc. I gave that up to "Materials for the Arts" ages ago, and I miss sewing. Plus, I REALLY want to learn to quilt. So I decided on a sewing machine as my big wish list item.

I've done a bit of research, and I really only need a simple, sturdy, mechanical workhorse (none of that computer embroidery stuff, I wouldn't use it, to be honest). I'd LOVE a Bernina, but we can't take a second mortgage on the house right now! :) So I've settled on The Elna

What do you think?

I have an Elna. It certainly isn't fancy or anything but it gets the job done. I like it because even when I don't use it for a year, it's simple enough that I can still remember how to thread it and make a bobbin without having to find the instruction manual (where *did* I put that again?). I admittedly don't use it that often but I've never had to get it repaired or anything like that (knock wood).

A sewing machine for Chanukah. Now that is a pleasant change of pace from iPod central.

My great-grandfather was a tailor but I can't sew to save my life.

Looks like a good machine. We've got a Janome too, and it did us well for our blessing gifts (made shaggy-raggy quilts for all of our attendants and our priests). Trish is now using it to learn to quilt. My quilting mother gave it to us. Your Elna looks very similar.

Can't wait to see what you make!

Very nice machine! I have had my elna for 10+ years, and it still works perfectly.

I'd like a sewing machine, but then I'd also like to know how to sew something other than straight lines (but Oh! can I make really boring patchwork pillows and quilts).

I know nothing about sewing machines, but I have a question. Why do some people spell Chanukah with a 'ch' and some spell it with an 'h'? Is there are "correct" way? Just curious. :-)

I've been afraid to learn to use a sewing machine since I was small and heard the tale of my grandmother sewing her finger to a garment. A left-handed thing? Probably. But as you're an expert of sorts, that Elna is very pretty.

Looks fabulous! I have two sewing machines and a Bernina serger. My first sewing machine I still use a lot. It was $30 at a yard sale my MIL helped me pick up. She found me someone to overhaul it for cheap. The second is a very old Singer Featherweight. They are hard to find, and all they do is a straight stich. I've been told they are a quilters dream, but I haven't learned to use it too much yet. The serger my DH bought me as a surprise for XMas last year. I love it. He puts me to work making curtains a lot around the house, and serging frayed ends is great!!! His mom helped him pick it out. She sews for a living.

BTW, I also come from a big family of quilters and as we travel we always look for a quilt store to visit. We were at one in NYC and it was really nice. Enjoy!!!
